Diplomatic moves towards resolving the devastating war taking place in Sudan picked up momentum over the weekend as part of a crucial trilateral meeting that sought to lay down a road map for stability and security in the region. Sudan trilateral peace talks
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with his Sudanese counterpart Mohieldin Salem and Massad Boulos, the US President’s senior advisor on Arab and African affairs. The tripartite talks were dominated by discussions about building on existing efforts at de-escalation and laying out a practical plan for a sustainable political resolution of the situation in line with the interests of the Sudanese people.
In the course of the discussion, Foreign Minister Abdelatty emphasized the absolute importance of protecting the sovereignty, unity, statehood, and resources of Sudan. Characterizing the consultations on social media as “constructive,” Cairo reiterated its call for heightened international and regional coordination to facilitate an inclusive negotiation process capable of halting the hostilities.
The renewed diplomatic push comes against the backdrop of persistent military engagements across Sudan. Just hours prior to the trilateral talks, the Sudanese Armed Forces reported successfully repelling a joint offensive launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) alongside the allied Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North across two strategic zones in the southeastern Blue Nile state.
The violent confrontation between the regular army and the RSF, which ignited in April 2023, precipitated one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. According to figures compiled by the United Nations, the ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties while forcing roughly 13 million individuals to flee their homes, causing massive displacement both internally and across international borders.
Through these renewed discussions, Egyptian and American representatives seek to leverage diplomatic channels to restore security, safeguard public interests, and lay down concrete prerequisites for a durable peace agreement in the Horn of Africa and wider Red Sea region. Cairo News Agency
