Defense ministers of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus have pledged to enhance their trilateral defense partnership by signing a joint statement geared towards enhancing stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The summit comprised high-level deliberations among Egypt’s Commander-in-Chief and Minister of Defense and Military Production Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher, Greece’s National Defense Minister Nikolaos Dendias, and Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas. This summit is a continuation of efforts to strengthen military ties in the region based on economic and security considerations in the Mediterranean Sea.
During the opening proceedings, Lieutenant General Zaher commended the historic relations uniting the three Mediterranean nations, emphasizing that steady coordination through the trilateral framework remains central to maintaining regional equilibrium. He urged all parties to build upon previous operational successes to protect joint interests and preserve regional peace.
Greek Defense Minister Dendias commended the strategic weight of the Egyptian Armed Forces, identifying them as a cornerstone of security across the broader Middle East. He noted that the expanding trilateral alignment operates strictly within the framework of international law and multilateral conventions to ensure open maritime access and regional safety.
Cypriot Defense Minister Palmas stated that the security gathering directly builds upon the momentum established at the El Alamein leaders’ summit, stressing that rapid geopolitical shifts necessitate closer intelligence and defense integration. Ahead of the joint session, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received the Greek and Cypriot ministers in Cairo to reaffirm Egypt’s commitment to expanding military ties. On the sidelines, Zaher held bilateral meetings with Dendias and Palmas to discuss defense technology exchanges, joint operational training, and bilateral military capabilities alongside Egyptian Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa.
